Hummel

Berta Hummel was born on May 21st 1909. As a child her mother nichnamed her Das Hummele which is the german word bumble-bee. (The bummble bee has found its way into the back stamps of Hummel pieces ) Her father supported Berta's interest in art and she developed a passion for drawing. She apparently had a wonderful sence of humor and was full of energy. Her drawings first became figurines when the Goeble factory were permitted to produce them in 1934. The convent of which she was a member still holds the rights to her drawings and continued to enable the Goeble factory to produce these pieces up until 2007. Each figure is a creation from the collection of drawings and sketches done by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel. A clay model is made which must be authorised by the convent before it can go into production. |
